Long before there was an album, Lynn Graham was writing through her life. Love, disappointment, desire, tenderness, self-worth—the things she was still trying to understand went onto private journal pages.
They were not written as songs. Years later, she returned to them with a different kind of understanding. At 55, she could recognize both the woman who had written those words and the woman she had become.
VELVET PRAYER — THE GROWN ERA grew from that distance: lived experience heard again, this time with music behind it. The details began in one woman’s life. The emotions made room for someone else to hear herself.

The creator’s point of view
A familiar feeling,
heard in a new way.
Putting music behind the writing changed Graham’s relationship with her own words. What she understood on a page could land differently as a song. That realization gave the project a purpose beyond autobiography.
“I knew I wasn’t the only woman who had lived some of these things,” she said. “Maybe another woman never wrote it down. Maybe she never said it out loud.”
The project makes room for the questions experience teaches us to ask: Is this love safe? Is it reciprocal? Can I remain myself inside it?
“Carry Gold” turns that care outward. It recognizes Black men’s dignity, tenderness, vulnerability, and right to rest alongside their strength. “Groceries & Grace” finds romance in ordinary devotion. “Looks Real on Me” closes with self-possession.
